Planting Roots in Orana: Chris’s Journey to a Thriving Community

Originally from Sydney, Chris and his partner John were living and working in Melbourne’s South-Eastern suburbs when the pull to set down more permanent roots took hold. Having arrived in Melbourne at the beginning of Covid lockdowns, not knowing his community and feeling like an outsider, was the greatest challenge for Chris.

In searching for a home, they were looking for more than just bricks and mortar. They wanted connection, purpose, and the chance to be part of something meaningful. That search led them to Clyde North and eventually Orana, a community where people come together to grow, share, and support one another.

As a researcher in psychology, Chris understood the importance of connection and belonging. Even before making the move, he made it a priority to build relationships within the community. After seeing that a community garden was being established, he and John joined the community garden residents’ group even before moving into their new home. This proactive approach allowed him and his partner to feel at home from the moment they arrived, easing the transition and reinforcing their decision to embrace a more connected way of life.

For Chris, the transition to Orana was more than just a physical move—it was a transformation in the way he lived. He found himself immersed in a close-knit environment where neighbours genuinely cared for one another, and where the simple act of growing food could foster deeper connections. Gardening, which had once been a hobby, quickly became a passion as he worked alongside other members of the community garden. Together, they have cultivated not just fresh produce, but a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Chris’s new life has been the ability to give back. He and his partner have embraced the community ethos, taking part in initiatives that promote sustainability, food security, and inclusivity. Whether it’s sharing homegrown vegetables, lending a hand with local projects, or simply enjoying conversations with fellow residents, Chris has found fulfillment in the everyday moments that define life in Orana.

Moving to Orana has reaffirmed Chris’s belief that community is more than just a place—it’s the people who make it special. Through his home ownership journey, he has discovered that a thriving community isn’t just about living side by side, but about growing together, supporting one another, and making a lasting impact.

For those considering a similar change, Chris’s story is a testament to the power of community, the beauty of shared purpose, and the joy of putting down roots—both in the soil and in the heart of a welcoming home.
