We are Orana

Nurse Kim

A vital anchor for families of Orana, meet Nurse Kim. From Mauritius, to Monash to Maternal Health - this smiling face can't wait to meet you.

For Kim, the journey to becoming a Maternal and Child Health Nurse was a series of “dominoes” that began right after high school. While her double degree at Monash covered both nursing and midwifery, it was the latter that first captured her heart. Supporting mothers at their most vulnerable was a profound experience, and it naturally opened a door to the world of early childhood—the precious window from newborn to six years old.

Today, Kim is a familiar, trusted face in the Casey community, known for a practice that is as much about the parents as it is about the little ones. “I always approach my work with the belief that the parents are the experts,” she says. “I’m here to provide the holistic support and education to help them flourish into their roles.”

I always approach my work with the belief that the parents are the experts,” she says. “I’m here to provide the holistic support and education to help them flourish into their roles.

Now, that support is moving even closer to home. Kim is settling into her new consult room at Orana Community Place, where she’ll be based every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

For Kim, the move is about more than just a new office; it’s about being in the heart of a rapidly growing, diverse community. She looks forward to the daily highlights that make her job so special—seeing familiar faces, hearing new stories, and watching local children grow at what feels like light speed.

For new parents or those just moving into the area, Kim’s service is a vital anchor. While many arrive thinking a Maternal and Child Health visit is simply about weighing the baby or checking a growth chart, Kim is passionate about “nurturing the whole package.”

A typical 45-minute session is designed to be a calm and informative experience. Kim, a self-described “tea girl,” often starts with a chat over a peppermint tea to see how the caregivers are ‘really’ doing. The session then moves into a child assessment and a safe space for any questions or concerns. “We work in partnership,” Kim explains. “It’s a non-judgmental, safe environment where families can feel informed and supported.”

She even keeps a stash of toys ready for older siblings, ensuring that the whole family feels at home. For those who can’t make it to the hub—perhaps due to a lack of transport or the exhaustion of those first few weeks home from the hospital—Kim also provides essential home visits.

Having a health service located within a community hub like Orana Community Place is, in Kim’s eyes, a game-changer. It allows for more appointments and easier access as the area expands. Her best advice for newcomers? “Connect.” She has been amazed by the variety of programs offered at the House and encourages parents to look for groups beyond just parenting. Building that wider community, she believes, is a core pillar of personal wellbeing.

When she isn’t helping Orana’s littlest residents hit their milestones, Kim focuses on her own balance. You’ll often find her at the gym, tending to her beloved plants, or exploring the city’s food scene with her partner. She is a foodie and one who is passionate about health and wellbeing.

Kim’s own story is one of resilience and connection. Having moved to Australia from Mauritius at age 11 without knowing a word of English, she understands the challenge of readjusting to a new environment. Supported by her parents and sisters who are also here in Australia, she has built a life centred around care. Now, she’s ready to help the families of Orana do the same, one peppermint tea and one milestone at a time.
