Striving to build a world where every voice is heard and every culture is celebrated, wife and mum of three, Sharon, is ready to make a lasting impact as a cornerstone of the community. With a vision to empower and uplift others, she is determined to create an environment where individuals can share their skills, grow, and remain connected to their community.
Since moving into Orana in 2022, and experiencing the strong sense of community, Sharon quickly recognised the untapped potential in connecting with those around her. Inspired by the family-friendly atmosphere and her current pursuit of social work, she envisions a vibrant and engaged community where all cultures and genders are honoured, and no one gets left behind.
Recognising the cultural traditions that have long perpetuated the idea of women being limited to domestic roles and defined solely by their husbands’ names, Sharon is a catalyst for change. With determination, she challenges these limitations and empowers others to seek a more modern approach.
Moreover, she acknowledges the immense wisdom, experience, and value that the older generation brings to the community. She understands that their presence is not only a source of guidance but also a vital thread that connects the past, present, and future. With a deep sense of respect and admiration, she seeks ways to keep them connected within the Orana community, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Through various initiatives and programs, Sharon actively encourages intergenerational interactions, bridging the gap between the young and the old. She organises events where everyone can come together to share their stories, pass down traditions, and impart invaluable life lessons to the younger members of the community. In doing so, Sharon creates an environment where everyone feels valued, cherished, and respected.
Having already hosted cooking classes and IT classes for the older generations here within the Community House, Sharon looks ahead to the diverse array of cultural celebrations with her eye on the upcoming Indian festival of ‘Teeyan’ in July, where she hopes many of the women of Orana can come together to celebrate as daughters, sisters and mothers.
In her commitment to Orana’s vibrant community, Sharon exemplifies a dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and the celebration of every voice and culture.
